City of Uji(宇治), Kyoto Prefecture

Getting to Uji is within 30 minutes by JR line from Kyoto Station.

Uji(宇治) is well known for green tea and a World Cultural Heritage Byodoin(平等院).

What I like about this area is that it’s not as busy as other big cities, and still Uji has a really unique atmosphere.

I would say that Uji is not a place you enjoy big selection of gourmet or not a place that has a night life for tourists.

if you want to experience different taste of Kyoto, this is definitely a place to extend your trip to in Kyoto.

Byodoin(平等院) is the most popular tourism spot to visit.

Byodoin phoenix hall is represented on a 10 yen coin.

Personally, I’m impressed the idea behind the establishment of this temple.

Back in 11th century, spread of diseases on top of frequent natural disasters and battles caused tremendous fears of death to people.

Byodoin was built to sooth these emotional confusion that people had to feel by representing paradise land in afterlife.

There is a museum where you can see a big collection of national treasures and displays.

Unfortunately photo taking is prohibited inside, but here is it’s URL⤵

Strolling down the main street and surrounding area in Uji is really interesting and even more relaxing than walking through big cities.

Below is a selection of pictures I got⤵

You can try green tea soba noodle here

If you miss a modern cup of coffe, here is a good looking Starbucks

There is a narrow and long land sitting in the middle of the river. There are benches if you want have a little rest.

Symbol of the tale of genji. There is a museum at the other side of the river.

Uji = Byodoin→green tea soft icecream→enjoy the scenery

I recommend you to bring lunch box or food on your own since there are not many restaurant to have a big lunch around this area.
